When I did this lesson with Marianne many weeks ago we talked about lessons that would compliment this rolling of the head, the discussion moved into some delicious territory of human survival and how the position of the head moving freely to look ‘around’ us was critical to the human species staying alive.

Think of being in dangerous territory and having to have your wits tuned in to all that is going on in the surroundings. Turning to look to the right and the left becomes an all body experience in wanting to see as far as possible. Yesterday’s lesson with the imaginary carrot rooted deep into the ribs had us explore ways to turn and involve more of the torso, the deeper the origin of rotation, the free-er the head is to move so that that eyes can see, the ears, hear, the nose takes in the air around us and tests the temperature as it smells for danger, and the tastebuds taste our surroundings. The teleceptors come to life when awareness is switched on.

This gentle “work” we are doing with the head is crucial for our personal development, you could say reaching maturity with awareness… bare minimum getting a taste of this state to have a choice for when maturity is needed, as sometimes it is. The position of the head affects the voice, tone and delivery of words as well as movements which affects not only how we relate to our selves, it also affects how others relate to us.

David Zemach-Bersin demonstrates the whole body connection through the head here:

Tonight we’ll be doing a lesson with Ruthy Alon, she has some beautiful movements for freeing the neck, in my view she is the feminine version of Moshe… her tone and style is very soft yet powerful.

The way she teaches, it’s like Functionally Integrating the self, and Mia Segal together with her daughter Leora Gaster are doing similar yet not the same with their trainings. Teaching people to functionally integrate these movements via Awareness Through Movement lessons - from their perspective, they are one of the same.
