
One thing I learned from the Mind Body Studies training with Mia’s daughter, Leora, was Newton’s third law…
“for every action,
there is an equal and opposite reaction”
If something’s pressing, then something else is lifting…. even though Leora was really big on this aspect, in the almost 30 years I’ve been doing Feldenkrais I hadn’t heard it from many other practitioners.
This week I’ve been listening to a few of Moshe’s lessons and he does mention it quite a bit, not necessarily as if it’s a big thing, the way I heard him deliver the information was with an of course-ness.
Like picking up a bag of potting mix from the middle off the ground, and the dirt falls to each end, the dirt’s got to move somewhere…. and I think this is one of the angles Moshe was thinking from with the human body, I have no doubt there are many many more. This way of thinking of how my weight is distributed as I walk up and down stairs for example, shifting weight from one leg to the other.. because it’s different to how I “normally” get up stairs, it makes the experience more enjoyable, and less strenuous. Lately I’ve been experimenting with pushing through the lower belly into the feet to press in to each step, and that again has changed the experience to be also interesting…. especially going down stairs with my weight forward as I push through the lower belly to assist the feet touch the next step.

A lot of people apply this to mechanics, yet very few to BIOmechanics which (I think) is what had Moshe stand out from the rest.
