Suggestion: Tonight’s lesson could prove challenging for some people (Vita - looking at you), so it might be best to practice it in the imagination as you listen.
The vast majority of Human BEings spend 9 months in the womb, curled up in the fetal position. When the head moves through the small canal that opens to the outside world, that’s the first experience of extension. That’s when the head is pushed backward for a brief moment to make the delivery smooth. You might imagine, in a way, that drastic change of movement on its own is a shock to the system - let alone all the lights, a complete change in environment, temperature, sounds amplified, ‘things’ touching the skin.. all quite shock-ing to a newborn.
As we grow to be able to extend ourselves for walking we are constantly learning to navigate our relationship with the magnetic fields around us, finding a neutral place for our heads to sit atop the neck/torso all that way from the ground - quite the balancing act.
Nowadays with mobile phones it’s very common to see the head slouched forward reverting back to the fetal position as the lower back compensates to balance the weight, and it too rounds and curls the spine as if ready to enter the womb… of social media.
This lesson brings us back in to extension which can sometimes be uncomfortable for the fascial tissue. Fascia, like glue can get sticky once it gets accustomed to a particular way of BEing… so PLEASE be gentle with the movements. Take your time, breathe, remember to soften your body (and your thoughts) rather than force anything to go where it obviously doesn’t want to.
