To give you more variety in the way practitioners deliver these movements, today we meet Sharon Starika, she is somebody who has contributed a huge amount of lessons to the OpenATM project.
From her website:
“Sharon Starika was a runner and triathlete with over 20 years of competitive racing experience. Her involvement with the Certified Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education began in 1984 when she had a debilitating cycling accident resulting in nine surgeries. Her doctors said she would never compete again and probably would not be able to run. Using the Feldenkrais Method®, she not only recovered and returned to competition, she improved her marathon time by an astonishing 20 minutes. As a result of this incredible experience, Sharon became a Guild Feldenkrais Practitioner™ and began to develop her own theory and ideas about optimizing fitness using the Feldenkrais Method®.”
The way she approaches this Method:
“The Feldenkrais Method is for anyone who wants to reconnect with their natural abilities to move, think and feel. Whether you want to be more comfortable sitting at your computer, playing with your children and grandchildren, or performing a favorite pastime, these gentle lessons can improve your overall well-being.
Learning to move with less effort makes daily life easier. Because the Feldenkrais Method focuses on the relationship between movement and thought, increased mental awareness and creativity accompany physical improvements. Everyone, from athletes and artists to administrators and attorneys, can benefit from the Feldenkrais Method.”
And…. more on the goal of the OpenATM Project is to make Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) Lessons available to everyone around the world.
In ATM classes, students are guided through a sequence of gentle movements. By moving slowly and paying attention, the nervous system discovers new possibilities and lets go of less functional habits or patterns. This results in more efficient movement, a feeling of lightness, reduction in aches and pains, and an increased sense of self-awareness.
The openATM.org lessons have been downloaded in countries as diverse as Australia, Austria, Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Germany, India, and the United States. Please click on the Recordings link to view the available ATM lessons.
Many of these lessons are reinterpretations of (inspired by and loosely based on) ATM Lessons taught by Moshe Feldenkrais at the Alexander Yanai, Esalan, San Fransisco and Amherst trainings, or other workshops. These audio lessons are not reproductions of the original lessons.
