Differentiation of Parts and Functions in Breathing (Lesson 4 in the book)
This way of breathing is referred to as ‘seesaw’ breathing and it is often used in lessons, usually when we are in very unusual positions. If you have been wondering why, he gives an explanation in this lesson.
If you are somebody who has done this movement MANY times, he offers a suggestion at the end:
“read lesson 4 in the book,
page 100..
and next time when you repeat it,
don’t follow absolutely the rhythm of my instructions…
only the points where you change movement,
in between feel it your own way,
in your own rhythm…
don’t abide by the instructions word by word.”
The first paragraph chapter 4
Differentiation of Parts and Functions in Breathing
reads:
“Now you will learn to recognize the movements of the ribs,
diaphragm and abdomen
that make up your breathing.
Proper adjustment of these movements is necessary in order
to breathe deeply and easily.
You will be able to recognise the difference in the length
of the periods of breathing in and out,
and to realize that the process of breathing adjusts itself
to the posture of the body with respect to gravity.
The lower ribs move more than the upper ones
and contribute more to breathing.
You will finally see that breathing becomes easier
and more rhythmical when the body is held erect
without any conscious effort,
that is,
when its entire weight is supported by the skeletal structure.”
I recommend becoming familiar with this SeeSaw breathing method, Moshe brings it in at unusual times (when least expected) during quite a few lessons in the Alexander Yannai series… and if you notice a difference at the end of this lesson, it is the reason why he does such things!
